Local investments mean regional improvements

Sewer District grants, more than $100 million since 2016, continue to improve local sewer infrastructure

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District’s Board of Trustees recently awarded 27 Member Community Infrastructure Program (MCIP) grants worth almost $25 million to address issues that affect customers closest to home.

MCIP provides funding to member communities and eligible political subdivisions for sewer infrastructure rehab, replacement and improvement projects that address water quality and quantity issues like failing septic systems, sewer flooding, sanitary sewer overflows and common trench sewers. These challenges contribute to poor water quality throughout our region and adversely impact human health and the environment. Mitigating them through cost-effective local sewer infrastructure projects contributes to regional water quality improvements.

Since the program’s inception in 2016, the Sewer District has awarded $102.3 million towards 134 publicly-owned infrastructure improvement projects, leveraging an additional $104.1 million in member community sewer infrastructure investments.

“Failing septic systems, sewer flooding, sanitary sewer overflows and common trench sewers contribute to poor water quality throughout our region,” said Matt Scharver, Director of Watershed Programs. “This program provides a vital funding mechanism to assist with needed repairs and new sewer infrastructure while protecting and improving the region’s water resources.”

MCIP grants in this funding round total $24,945,396.94, including:
